IFS THERAPY
IFS Therapy on Long Island & Throughout New York State
What if the parts of yourself you’ve been fighting are actually trying to protect you?
Maybe there’s a part of you that wants connection and another part that pushes people away.
A part that desperately wants to rest and another that won’t let you stop working.
A part that knows you deserve boundaries and another that feels terrified of disappointing someone.
These conflicting experiences can leave you feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself.
At Suffolk Family Therapy, we incorporate Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed therapy and parts work into our approach to trauma treatment. We help clients understand the protective patterns they’ve developed, build more compassionate relationships with themselves, and address the experiences that continue to influence their lives.
We provide parts-informed trauma therapy on Long Island, with offices in Bohemia and Smithtown, as well as virtual therapy throughout New York State.

WHAT IS IFS?
What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?
Internal Family Systems therapy, also known as IFS, is a psychotherapy model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz that recognizes we all have different internal parts influencing how we think, feel, and respond to experiences.
You may recognize these parts when you experience conflicting thoughts or emotions.
One part wants to speak up, while another fears rejection. One part wants to trust someone, while another expects to be hurt.
IFS therapy helps us understand these internal responses rather than criticizing or trying to eliminate them.
Managers
Protective parts that try to prevent distress through behaviors such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, or staying in control.
Firefighters
Protective parts that respond when distress becomes overwhelming, sometimes through avoidance, emotional outbursts, or numbing
Exiles
Parts that carry painful emotions, memories, or beliefs associated with earlier experiences.
IFS also emphasizes Self, a core state characterized by qualities such as compassion, curiosity, calmness, and clarity.
The goal isn’t to get rid of your parts. It’s to help you develop a more compassionate relationship with them so they no longer need to operate in extreme ways.
WHO IFS THERAPY HELPS
IFS Therapy for Childhood Trauma, Complex PTSD, Anxiety, and People-Pleasing
When you grow up in an unpredictable, critical, or emotionally neglectful environment, you may develop protective strategies that help you navigate those experiences.
For example:
- A child who learns that expressing emotions leads to criticism may develop a part that suppresses feelings.
- A child who experiences inconsistent caregiving may develop a part that becomes fiercely independent.
- A child who feels responsible for a parent’s emotions may develop a part that constantly monitors everyone else’s needs.
These patterns may continue into adulthood, even when they’re no longer helpful.
IFS-informed therapy and parts work may help clients explore:
- Childhood trauma and complex PTSD: Protective responses connected to earlier experiences.
- Anxiety and hypervigilance: Parts that constantly anticipate problems or threats.
- People-pleasing and boundaries: Parts that fear rejection, conflict, or disappointing others.
- Perfectionism and burnout: Parts that believe productivity determines self-worth.
- Relationship and attachment difficulties: Conflicting needs for connection, independence, and protection.
- Self-criticism and shame: Inner critics that attempt to prevent mistakes or rejection.
Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with me?” parts work encourages us to ask, “What is this part trying to protect me from?”
IFS vs. TRADITIONAL TALK THERAPY
IFS Therapy vs. Talk Therapy: Understanding Why You Feel Stuck
Maybe you’ve spent years in therapy understanding your childhood experiences.
You recognize your patterns. You know why you struggle with boundaries. You understand that you don’t need to please everyone.
But when someone becomes upset with you, you still feel overwhelmed by guilt or fear.
This is where parts work can offer a different perspective.
Rather than focusing exclusively on changing a thought or behavior, IFS-informed therapy explores the protective responses influencing that behavior.
For example, a client may understand that they deserve to set boundaries, but a younger protective part may still believe that disappointing someone will lead to abandonment.
Instead of forcing that part to change, we explore what it fears, how it developed, and what it needs to feel safer.
Understanding a pattern intellectually doesn’t always mean the parts of us responsible for that pattern feel safe enough to respond differently.
IFS-informed therapy can complement other therapeutic approaches by helping clients develop greater self-understanding and internal cooperation.
OUR INTEGRATED APPROACH
How We Combine IFS and EMDR Therapy for Trauma Recovery
At Suffolk Family Therapy, we frequently integrate parts-informed approaches with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
EMDR helps clients process distressing memories and associated beliefs, emotions, and physical responses.
IFS-informed therapy helps us understand the protective parts that may be activated by those experiences.
For example, a client may want to process a childhood memory but notice another part becoming fearful, avoidant, or overwhelmed.
Rather than viewing that response as resistance, we become curious about its protective purpose.
What is that part afraid will happen? What does it need to feel safe?
Our trauma-informed approach emphasizes developing emotional regulation, understanding protective responses, and assessing readiness before beginning intensive trauma processing.
We don’t believe in forcing protective parts aside to access traumatic memories.
Our goal is to help clients develop a compassionate relationship with themselves while addressing unresolved experiences at a clinically appropriate pace.
STRUCTURED TRAUMA THERAPY
The Reclaiming Pathway™: Structured Trauma Recovery With Parts Work
At Suffolk Family Therapy, parts-informed therapy is integrated into The Reclaiming Pathway™, our structured trauma recovery program.
Our program combines weekly individual trauma-focused therapy with weekly therapeutic groups to support meaningful and sustainable change.
Our Four Stages of Trauma Recovery
1. Build Capacity
Develop emotional awareness, regulation skills, and a compassionate understanding of protective parts.
2. Resolve the Past
When clinically appropriate, process distressing experiences using EMDR and other trauma-focused interventions.
3. Reclaim Your Life
Develop healthier relationship patterns, boundaries, and ways of responding to emotional challenges.
4. Sustain Recovery
Strengthen self-awareness, internal trust, and the ability to maintain progress beyond active treatment.
Parts work helps clients understand not only what they do, but why different aspects of themselves respond the way they do.

IFS THERAPY FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About IFS Therapy
What Is the Difference Between IFS Therapy and Parts Work?
Internal Family Systems is a specific psychotherapy model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. Parts work is a broader term for therapeutic approaches that explore different aspects of internal experience. Therapists may incorporate IFS-informed concepts without practicing the complete IFS model.
Can IFS Therapy Help With Childhood Trauma?
IFS-informed therapy may help clients understand protective responses and internal conflicts connected to childhood experiences. It can be integrated with other trauma-focused interventions based on individual clinical needs.
Is IFS Therapy Effective for PTSD?
IFS is a promising approach, but research supporting it for PTSD remains more limited than research for established treatments such as EMDR. It may be incorporated into a broader trauma treatment plan when clinically appropriate.
Can IFS Therapy Help With Anxiety and People-Pleasing?
Parts-informed therapy can help clients explore the protective beliefs and responses contributing to anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and difficulty setting boundaries.
Can IFS and EMDR Therapy Be Used Together?
Yes. Clinicians with appropriate training may integrate parts-informed interventions into EMDR preparation and treatment to help clients understand protective responses and support readiness for reprocessing.
Do I Need to Have PTSD to Benefit From Parts Work?
No. Parts-informed therapy may be helpful for exploring internal conflict, self-criticism, relationship patterns, and other concerns, even when someone doesn’t meet criteria for PTSD.
Do You Offer Virtual IFS Therapy in New York?
Suffolk Family Therapy offers virtual trauma-focused psychotherapy throughout New York State, incorporating parts-informed approaches when clinically appropriate. Specific interventions depend on the assigned clinician’s training and treatment plan.
