EMDR THERAPY
EMDR Therapy on Long Island & Throughout New York State
You understand what happened to you. So why does it still affect how you feel today?
You may know that your past experiences weren’t your fault. You may understand why you struggle with anxiety, relationships, self-worth, or feeling safe. But understanding your trauma doesn’t always change how your mind and body respond to it.
At Suffolk Family Therapy, we provide EMDR therapy on Long Island and virtual EMDR therapy throughout New York State to help adults, teens, and children work through experiences that continue to affect their daily lives.
Our trauma-informed therapists use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as part of a structured, individualized approach to healing that goes beyond simply managing symptoms.
In-person therapy in Bohemia and Smithtown and virtual therapy throughout New York.

WHAT IS EMDR?
What Is EMDR Therapy and How Does It Work?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help people process distressing experiences that continue to influence their emotions, beliefs, physical responses, and behaviors.
When we experience something overwhelming, our brains may have difficulty fully processing that experience. Even years later, reminders of what happened can activate intense emotional or physical responses.
You might recognize that you’re no longer in danger, yet still experience fear, shame, anxiety, or a sense that something bad is about to happen.
EMDR therapy helps the brain process distressing memories so they become less emotionally disruptive.
During EMDR treatment, your therapist may use guided eye movements, alternating tapping, or other forms of bilateral stimulation while helping you work through specific memories and the beliefs associated with them.
EMDR doesn’t erase your memories. It helps change how those memories affect you in the present.
The goal isn’t to forget what happened. It’s to help you remember without continuing to experience the same level of distress, negative self-beliefs, or automatic survival responses.
WHO EMDR THERAPY CAN HELP
EMDR Therapy for PTSD, Childhood Trauma, Anxiety, and Complex Trauma
Trauma doesn’t always look the way people expect it to.
Some people experience nightmares, flashbacks, or panic attacks. Others continue functioning at a high level while struggling internally with perfectionism, chronic anxiety, people-pleasing, emotional disconnection, or difficulty feeling safe in relationships.
Not every difficulty is caused by trauma, and EMDR isn’t necessarily the appropriate treatment for every condition. Our clinicians begin with a comprehensive assessment to understand your experiences, symptoms, strengths, and treatment needs.
Our EMDR therapists work with people experiencing:
- PTSD and complex trauma: Distressing memories, hypervigilance, avoidance, emotional overwhelm, and persistent negative beliefs.
- Childhood trauma and emotional neglect: Early experiences that continue to influence self-worth, relationships, and emotional regulation.
- Anxiety and persistent fear: Patterns of distress that may be connected to earlier experiences, perceived threats, or unresolved memories.
- Relationship and attachment difficulties: Fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting others, people-pleasing, and challenges with boundaries.
- Grief, loss, and traumatic experiences: Distressing memories associated with sudden loss, medical trauma, accidents, or other overwhelming events.
- Trauma-related burnout and overfunctioning: Feeling responsible for everyone else, struggling to rest, and believing your worth depends on what you accomplish.
WHY TRADITIONAL TALK THERAPY MAY NOT FEEL LIKE ENOUGH
EMDR vs. Talk Therapy: Why Understanding Your Trauma May Not Be Enough
Maybe you’ve been in therapy before.
You understand your childhood experiences. You can identify your triggers. You recognize the patterns that show up in your relationships.
But when something activates those patterns, you still find yourself responding in ways you wish you could change.
You might freeze when someone is upset with you.
You might struggle to set boundaries even though you know they’re reasonable.
You might become overwhelmed by emotions that seem disproportionate to what’s happening.
Or you might continue feeling that you’re not good enough, despite knowing intellectually that you are.
Insight is important, but insight alone doesn’t always change an automatic trauma response.
Talk therapy can be valuable, and many approaches support meaningful trauma recovery. EMDR offers another way of working with the memories, emotions, beliefs, and body sensations that may continue to drive those responses.
Rather than relying exclusively on understanding why something happens, EMDR helps clients process experiences that may be contributing to their present-day difficulties.
Healthy relationships are not relationships without conflict. Treatment can help you remain present, communicate impact, take responsibility without collapsing into shame, tolerate another person’s perspective, and make meaningful behavioral changes after a rupture.
WHAT MAKES OUR APPROACH DIFFERENT
Our Approach to EMDR Therapy on Long Island: More Than Reprocessing Memories
Not every client is ready to begin trauma reprocessing immediately.
And being ready for EMDR involves more than simply wanting to work through your past.
At Suffolk Family Therapy, we recognize that effective trauma treatment requires an understanding of your current capacity to manage emotional distress, remain connected to the present, and access supportive resources.
Our EMDR therapists consider multiple areas of functioning, including emotional, physiological, cognitive, physical, relational, and behavioral capacity.
For some clients, treatment begins with developing resources and strengthening emotional regulation.
For others, processing specific memories may be appropriate earlier in treatment.
We also incorporate parts-informed approaches to help clients understand protective responses such as people-pleasing, avoidance, perfectionism, emotional shutdown, or anger.
We don’t believe in rushing trauma processing simply because someone has identified a painful memory.
Our goal is to provide individualized EMDR treatment that supports both symptom reduction and meaningful, sustainable changes in daily life.
STRUCTURED EMDR TRAUMA THERAPY
The Reclaiming Pathway™: A Structured EMDR Trauma Recovery Program
At Suffolk Family Therapy, EMDR therapy is integrated into The Reclaiming Pathway™, our structured trauma recovery program.
We recognize that healing from trauma often requires more than attending individual sessions and discussing what happened.
Our program combines weekly individual trauma-focused therapy with weekly therapeutic groups to help clients build skills, understand their responses, process unresolved experiences, and apply what they’re learning to everyday life.
Our Four Stages of Trauma Recovery
1. Build Capacity
Develop emotional awareness, stabilization resources, and the ability to recognize and respond to distress.
2. Resolve the Past
When clinically appropriate, use EMDR and other trauma-focused interventions to process distressing experiences that continue to influence the present.
3. Reclaim Your Life
Begin applying new beliefs, responses, and relationship patterns to everyday experiences, decisions, and relationships.
4. Sustain Recovery
Strengthen the changes you’ve made and develop strategies to support continued well-being beyond active treatment.
The Reclaiming Pathway™ is designed to provide structure while allowing treatment to move according to each client’s clinical needs and capacity.
